Ahu Akivi Trip

After collecting from you from your hotel on the island at the indicated time, we will travel to Ahu Akivi, one of the few moai sites located away from the coastline.

You will witness the seven moai of this sacred place, which faces exactly at the sunset during the March equinox. The moai of Ahu Akivi are the only Rapanui monuments to be situated so precisely in relation to an astronomical phenomenon.

As we tour this sanctuary, you will discover the significance of Ahu Akivi. Legend has it that the seven moai statues represent the seven explorers that discovered the island after a long and arduous trip from another island in what is today referred to as Polynesia.

The tour will then take us to Panu Pau, a quarry situated on a small volcanic crater where the Rapanui mined a distinctive red color sandstone. The sculptures of Easter Island used this rock to make the ‘pukao’ stone headdresses that can still be seen today on the top of some of the maoi. The ‘pukao’ was a typical hair bun that the Rapanui used to wear.

The last stop on the itinerary will be the Tahai Ceremonial Complex, where we will explore the archeological ruins that face the Pacific Ocean. At the end of our visit, we'll return to your hotel, arriving three hours after pickup.
